Choose the operating system your application supports and your team can maintain. Linux is a common fit for web applications, databases and Linux containers. Windows Server is often needed for Windows-specific software, Microsoft infrastructure roles or an established Windows administration workflow.
Licensing, updates and recovery also affect the decision. Compare those requirements for the actual deployment instead of assuming that one operating-system family is always cheaper, faster or easier to secure.
What a server operating system does
The operating system manages processes, memory, filesystems, networking, users and permissions. On a VPS, it is the guest system on which your applications run. Its supported versions and available packages shape installation, maintenance and recovery.
Server installations often omit desktop software and use remote administration. That can reduce unnecessary components, but a server label does not guarantee secure defaults, a particular support period or fewer exposed services. Review the selected image and what it starts on first boot.
Start with application compatibility
Check the application's support matrix before choosing a template. Include its runtime, database, extensions, vendor support and deployment tools. A language being available on both platforms does not mean every library or application built with it is portable.
Modern .NET supports multiple operating systems, as described in Microsoft's .NET overview. The older .NET Framework and applications using Windows-specific APIs are different cases. Likewise, SQL Server availability on Linux does not establish feature parity for every Windows deployment.
If both platforms support the complete workload, compare how your team will deploy, patch, monitor and restore it. Familiarity can save time, but confirm that the chosen approach meets the application's requirements.
Linux distributions for VPS hosting
Linux distributions combine the Linux kernel with packages, system tools and release policies. Common options include:
- Ubuntu Server: A widely documented option with LTS releases and a large software ecosystem.
- Debian: A distribution with stable releases and a broad package archive, also used as the basis for Ubuntu.
- AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux: Options to evaluate when software and administration practices target the RHEL family.
- Fedora Server: An option for teams prepared to follow its faster release cycle and more frequent upgrades.

These distributions commonly use SSH, systemd and package managers such as apt or dnf. Many concepts transfer, but package names, release versions, firewall tooling and security policies can differ.
Windows Server deployment choices
Windows Server provides Microsoft server roles and administration tools such as PowerShell, Server Manager and Windows Admin Center. Check the required edition, supported release, installation option and application compatibility. Also confirm what the VPS provider offers; its template menu may be narrower than Microsoft's full product range.
Licensing depends on the edition, hosting arrangement and how the software is used. A provider may include a Windows charge in the quoted plan or show it separately. Client access, Remote Desktop Services and application licences can have additional requirements. Confirm the terms for the intended use before comparing totals.

When Linux is a good fit
Linux is a useful starting point for workloads built around tools such as Nginx, Apache, PHP, Python, Node.js, Go, PostgreSQL or Linux containers. Check the supported combination of releases and packages for the application you will actually run.
It also fits teams that use SSH, scripts and configuration automation for routine operations. A small installation can leave more resources for the application, though monitoring, agents, databases and control panels all add their own load.
Many community distributions have no separate operating-system licence charge. Paid support, commercial distributions, control panels and application licences can still affect the total cost. Compare the complete setup rather than assuming every Linux deployment is free.

When Windows Server is the better VPS server OS
Windows Server is a practical choice when a required component is supported only on Windows. Examples include a .NET Framework application, a Windows-specific IIS module, a Windows server role or vendor software with a supported Windows-only installation.
Active Directory and Group Policy requirements may also determine the choice. Linux systems can integrate with some directory services, but that does not make their roles or management behaviour identical to Windows Server.
For SQL Server, check the exact features and integrations needed. For a Remote Desktop workflow, confirm both software support and licensing, including the distinction between administrative access and providing sessions to users.
An existing team may have tested deployment, monitoring and recovery procedures for Windows. Include the value of those procedures when comparing migration work and operating cost.
What changes in day-to-day administration
Remote access and automation
Linux administration commonly uses SSH with keys and controlled privilege elevation. Windows can use RDP, PowerShell remoting and supported OpenSSH configurations. PowerShell transport choices depend on the installed version and setup; do not assume every deployment uses the same method.
Restrict administrative exposure on either platform. Use individual accounts, appropriate authentication controls and a tested recovery path. A graphical session is not inherently safer or less automatable than a shell.
Updates and restarts
Both systems need operating-system and application updates. Some changes require a service restart; others require a reboot. On Linux, kernel changes are not the only possible reason to restart the host, and live patching covers only supported scenarios.
On Windows, review the requirements of the applicable update and installed roles. Plan maintenance, check service health afterwards and test recovery on both platforms. Uptime depends on the application and deployment design as well as update behaviour.
Configuration and security
Linux commonly uses text configuration files and package-specific service settings. Windows uses a mixture of files, registry settings, policies and management APIs. Both support configuration automation, but tools must account for the application's actual storage and permission model.
Review users, privileges, listeners, secrets and application permissions on either OS. Installing a server image does not replace hardening, and a secure host can still run a vulnerable application.
Resource use
Compare the complete installation under representative load. Desktop components, antivirus, monitoring, databases and background tasks can substantially change memory and storage requirements.
A minimal container is not a measurement of a complete virtual machine: it shares a host kernel and omits parts of a normal server installation. Use a suitable VM or the intended VPS for capacity testing, and include backup and maintenance activity.
Questions to settle before provisioning
Which Linux distribution should I choose?
Start with the application's supported releases, then consider the team's package-management experience and the required support period. Ubuntu Server LTS, Debian and RHEL-family distributions suit different support and operational needs. Choose a release you can keep patched for the planned service lifetime.
Is Windows worth the additional cost?
It can be when it avoids an application rewrite, provides a required server role or fits an established operating process. First confirm the full quote and licence requirements; a generic per-VM surcharge assumption may not match the provider's offer.
Can one platform run software intended for the other?
Sometimes, through virtual machines, supported compatibility features or a portable runtime. Verify the production support contract and nested-virtualisation requirements where relevant. WSL and compatibility layers are not automatic substitutes for an application's supported server environment.
For containers, match the image's operating-system requirements with a supported host arrangement. A Linux container still needs a Linux kernel, whether on the host or inside a VM.
Can I change the operating system later?
Treat a move between operating-system families as a migration. Inventory data, application versions, permissions, paths, scheduled jobs, certificates and integrations. Test the replacement, plan the traffic cutover and retain a usable recovery path.
A provider's reinstall action may erase the existing disk. Confirm its behaviour and verify independent backups before using it.
Choose the platform that supports the application and gives the team a maintainable deployment. Then verify access, updates, performance and recovery on that specific configuration.
